Information in English

Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu called on all the ministers, at the start of the Government's meeting on Thursday, to begin the consultations on the promotion of the 2008 state budget.

'I want us to begin the discussions, first and foremost, with the big trade union confederations, with the employers' associations, with the civil society. I want the debate of the budget to be really a comprehensive one, with the parliamentary parties, obviously. The framework within which the talks with the employers, trade unions and NGOs will be conducted is the Economic and Social Council. I ask you to go and present the budget at the Economic and Social Council, as our obligations are, and I want you to begin in-depth debates of this issue; we must promote this topic and we must find the necessary support in Parliament so that this budget may pass', the prime minister said.

Tariceanu also underscored that the adoption of the budget is a matter of national interest. 'I want to underline… that this is Romania's budget, the budget by which Romania develops, by which Romania achieves its projects. This is not the budget of a political party, I want this to be very clear. This is the message I want us to communicate. This is not a personal stake, this is a stake related to modern and prosperous Romania. The budget provides us the required levers so that all the public policies we make may be implemented and the results may reach the citizens', he said.

The 2008 draft budget is structured on 6 percent economic growth, 3.5 percent inflation rate and a budget deficit at 2.7 percent of GDP. The gross domestic product projected for next year amounts to 438.7 billion lei, up from 390 billion lei this year. Furthermore, the Government plans to cut the welfare contributions by 6 percent. Another measure being discussed refers the increased royalties on natural resources – mineral waters, oil, gas and coal.
