Agriculture to be earmarked 2.7 percent of GDP in 2008

The general aggregate budget allotted to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development next year will be of 2.7 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), accounting for a 13-percent rise as against the 2008 budget, PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu announced on Wednesday.
 
The priority programmes in the agricultural field in 2008 will be the sustainable development of the plant sector, the animal husbandry and fish sector, the Farmer programme, the sustainable development of forestry, investments in land improvements and the promotion of exports.
 
The sustainable development of the plant sector, the animal husbandry and fish sector is aimed at the increase in the number of cattle, the improvement in the biological quality of species and hybrids of the plant sector and in the quality of genetic material at animal species and their performance, the ensuring of the necessary consumption for population from the domestic production and the obtaining of available products for exports, rise of the farmers' revenues with a view to ensuring the necessary funds for the development of new investments.
 
The Farmer programme targets the capitalization of farmers, the concentration of farmland, facilitation of access to loans, increase in qualitative and quantitative production, improvement of processing and marketing of products, setting-up of associative forms, setting-up and consolidation of family farms with commercial character. To this end, the Farmer programme aims to establish produce processing units, animal farms and the leasing of land through the extension of the life annuities.
 
The sustainable development of forestry aims to finance the drives designed to contribute to the increase in the economic viability of the forestry sector, the removal of unfavourable effects of natural polluting factors, social-economic development of rural communities and preservation of biodiversity and natural ecosystems.
 
The improvement investments target the removal of the surplus of humidity and the avoidance of drought-caused damage and water excess, the reduction of the water and energy consumption.
