CFR Passengers considers buying hybrid jet trains

28 octombrie 2007

Information in English

CFR Passengers Co. considers the acquisition, in the next two years, of Bombardier jet trains with hybrid electric and diesel drive, CFR Passengers deputy manager Mihai Ion said on October 12.

Financial sources for the project have not been identified as yet, the line electrification plan will be completed in the next three – four months, and 50-100 trains is the optimal number of trains to be bought in the coming two years, the CFR Passengers official added.

The jet trains run on long distances, where there are segments of electrified lines and segments without electrified lines. "The use of such trains would be useful, for instance, along routes such as Bucharest – Mangalia, where we have to switch the engine in Constanta. They could be also used for Bucharest – Sibiu, where the electrified line goes only until Brasov or along Bucharest – Oradea, electrified until Cluj-Napoca. Another appropriate route would be Bucharest – Piatra Neamt," Ion said. The Romanian industry would participate in the production of trains, which would significantly cut prices.
