Bankers estimate lending interest rates to rise 2 pct

4 februarie 2008

Information in English

Bankers estimate an increase by up to 2 percent in the interest rates to loans in 2008. The consecutive increases in the key interests and the significant depreciation of the Romanian national currency leu pushed up the interest rates on the loans to the population. The credits in euros become more expensive as following the depreciation of the leu, with the credits in lei already having higher interests, as following the hardening monetary policy of the Romanian National Bank (BNR).

The studies made by the research departments of such banks like UniCredit or Erste forecast also a rise in the loan price. The rises have already been launched, with some banks (among which the Romanian Commercial Bank – BCR and UniCredit) having operated increases in the interest by 0.5-1 percent as an average and even of up to 3 percent in certain cases.

The national bank increased its monetary policy interest by 0.5 up to 8 percent on the occasion of the session in January, with the analysts and bankers estimating a new increase, by at least 0.5 percent on the occasion of the session in February.

The loans in hard currency represented 53 percent of the total loans in the end of 2007, that is an increase by 134.4 percent (four times the credits in lei) in 2007. The depreciation of the leu is to push up the costs of such credits, even with the interests and commissions staying the same.
