Big cities, health tourism – main tourist destinations in Romania in 2008
4 februarie 2008
Romania's main destinations for the foreign tourists will be this year the big cities and the health tourism, including the city of Sibiu, following the success of the 'Sibiu – 2007 European Cultural Capital' programme, Lucia Morariu, state secretary for Tourism in the Ministry for SMEs, Commerce, Tourism and Liberal Professions, told.
"The foreign tourists will go this year especially to the big cites, due to a higher interest in doing business in Romania in the wake of the EU entry, which will enable short-term holidays in the cities or close to them. When I speak about cities, I refer to those that have an adequate transport infrastructure and an important number of air links with Europe, such as Bucharest, Cluj, Timisoara, Sibiu, Constanta and Iasi, in perspective", added Lucia Morariu.
The state secretary added Romania would record a 10% rise in the number of tourists in 2008. In addition to the big cities, the health tourism will represent an attraction point for foreign tourists.
"There is high interest in the health resorts, where the investments made place us on the competitive market of the health tourism. I would exemplify with Baile Felix, which has a 4-star complex at European standards, in which Israel is interested. It will be an interesting field in the future if investments continue", said the quoted official.
Sibiu will remain an attraction for foreign tourists, even if 'Sibiu – 2007 European Cultural Capital' programme is over. "It is very clear for me that Sibiu will continue the positive trend gained due to its position of European Cultural Capital in 2007.
What happened in Sibiu in 2007 whetted European tourists' appetite for this city and the ending of the 'Sibiu – 2007 European Cultural Capital' programme does not mean Sibiu will lose its charm completely", said Morariu.
On the other hand, the Romanian seaside will continue to remain for the time being a target mainly for the Romanian tourists, in the lack of promotion and options for foreign tourists.
'The seaside is a target for the domestic tourism as long as 90% of tourists are Romanians. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but in order to ensure a lasting tourism it is very important for all the factors to contribute to the development of some tourist products to be sold in other countries. In this context, the successful solution for the seaside operators is to re-focus both to the domestic and foreign markets, considers Morariu.
'We will try to do what could not be done so far, namely to give support to the promotion of the big European tour-operators who would like to present Romania and the Romanian seaside in the holiday destinations offered their clients, through the modification of the legislation', said the state secretary.
The Governmental Decision Draft on the approval of the 2008 marketing and promotion policy and the perspective for the 2008-2011 period refers to the allocation of some 7 million euros in 2008 for promotion and marketing.
Moreover, the sum of 2.07 million euros will be allotted distinctly to the consultancy activities in view of drawing up the task book for the creation of the national tourist brand, and also to the activities for the creation of national tourist brand.
The tourist products that will be promoted with priority are business tourism in Bucharest and other important cities, cultural and heritage tourism in Transylvania, Maramures and Bucovina, short visits to Bucharest and main cities, health tourism, seaside tourism, geo-tourism and winter sports.
