GDP share of Romanian tourism to double by 2012

4 februarie 2008

Information in English

In 2012, Romanian tourism is expected to account for 6.9 pct of the GDP, twice the current share of 3.5 pct, Secretary of State for Tourism Lucia Morariu told Rompres.

Morariu says that the real GDP share of tourism should be higher because the current calculation thereof does not include business tourism, travels on duty and other auxiliary industries. "We identified some inconsistencies in the data collecting method and in what the GDP share of tourism is considered to represent.

There are certain branches that are not included in the calculation of the GDP share of tourism, such as trips on duty, or business tourism. We asked the National Statistics Institute to correct this situation because it seems that only holidays were taken into the general account, hence automatically the GDP share of tourism was lower. Some auxiliary industries were also not reflected in the GDP," said Lucia Morariu.

Tourism authorities intend modify, alongside the National Statistics Institute, the methodology for the calculation of the number of foreign tourists to Romania. The new methodology will ground on a questionnaire with precisely quantifiable indicators.
