Plan to bring Romanian migrant workers home

25 februarie 2008

Information in English

The government passed during its February 20 meeting a Plan of Action to bring back home Romanian citizens who left for work abroad.

According to Labour Minister Paul Pacuraru, the implementation of this plan is expected to have a particular social impact, helping get families back together, reduce adverse effects on children left under the care of relatives, and also in demographic terms.

The measures included in the normative act envisage on one hand keeping workforce in Romania and on the other hand encouraging the return home of Romanian citizens who work abroad. Under the said plan of action, databases on Romanian migrant citizens will be built and updated periodically starting December 2008. Statistic data will be collected on the number of Romanian citizens working abroad, their destination states, activity sectors, working conditions and reasons to emigrate.

Information campaigns on job opportunities and recruitment in Romania will be organised for Romanian citizens who work abroad, by the organisation of job fairs in areas with strong Romanian communities.

A first concrete action in this direction is the Job fair for Romanians in Rome, which is to take place on February 23, where Minister of Labour, Family and Equal Opportunities Paul Pacuraru will also be present.

Under the same Plan of Action approved by the government, a system will be set in place to encourage Romanian citizens return home and help their professional reintegration by the grant of facilities for the development of a business of their own capable of generating jobs, counselling on how to access European funds, assistance programs for the adaptation and integration/reintegration of Romanian migrant workers’ families upon return home, facilities for the professional re-qualification and credentialing, and the encouragement of the repatriation of highly skilled workers.
