The cumulated turnover of the three big companies with Romanian capital amounted in 2007 to 874m euros, up some 46% versus 2006. The growth of the construction sector and the expansion of the store chains were in 2007 the ‘engines’ for the rise in the sales of Arabesque, Ambient and Dedeman, the biggest Romanian companies of construction materials and DIY distribution, Ziarul Financiar daily writes.
On a market where the international DIY networks such as Praktiker, Bricostore or BauMax are in full expansion, the relevant companies in Romania are continuing their growth and are seeking new markets out of the country.
Arabesque, with 2007 turnover of 450m euros, opened in 2005 its first store outside Romania. In 2006, it bought a relevant distributor in Ukraine, and in 2007 it entered Bulgaria and Serbia through greenfield projects. Up to 50m euros will be inverted in the Arabesque distribution centres.
The retailer Ambient has developed in time several formats of trade and currently has 14 shopping centres, 17 proximity stores and two warehouses in Sibiu and Bucharest. Ambient will open another 12 shopping centres by end-2010, following some investments of 130m euros.
The Dedeman network, with 10 shopping centres, posted 2007 sales of some 184m euros, up over 60% versus 2006.
Several international networks – BauMax, Mr. Bricolage and Hornbach – have entered in the past years Romania’s DIY market, and German company Obi is preparing to enter this market.
