The eight units are located in the villages of Salasu de Sus, Rau de Mori, on Raul Mare Valley, Carnic area (at one of the gates of Retezat National Park) and at Rotunda hut of Hunedoara (central Romania) at altitudes ranging from 600 and 1,000 meters. In order to receive the license, the accommodation units in Retezat have been submitted to an assessment process of about 3 years.

The Retezat National Park is situated in the Retezat Mountains in south-western Romania, an area well-known for its glacial lakes. There are about 100 glacial lakes in this region, 40 of them being quite sizable. Historically speaking, the national park lies in the so-called Hateg Land, a sort cradle of Romanian civilization. In localities such as Densus, Santamaria Orlea and Strei, you can see some of the oldest Christian Orthodox churches on the territory of present day Romania. These churches date back to the 13th century.
The Retezat National Park is made up of several areas; the one with the highest level of protection is the so-called Taul Negru Twin, which is a scientific reserve. Access is reserved to researchers, who must have approval from the Romanian Academy.
The Retezat National Park was created in 1935 following Ministerial Council, being the first national park in Romania devoted to the preservation of flora and fauna. This region in south-western Romania is known for two species of bats, the greater horseshoe bat and the common pipistrelle.
Endemic to this area are the chamois and the red deer.
