Romanian Government hails March 15, Hungary’s National Day
17 martie 2008
The Romanian Government is hailing the celebration of March 15, an important moment in the history of the Hungarian people, reads a message delivered by Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu to the Hungarian community of Romania on March 15.
Tariceanu mentions that what united the Romanians and Hungarians in 1848 was the ideal of freedom, while in 2008 they are united by achievements and also by the objectives which all Romanian citizens have devised in their new capacity as citizens of the European Union.
"Harmony and the European spirit of the relations among the Romanian citizens are markers that we all need for a more prosperous life. European normalcy in everyday life should also reflect on support and affirmation of the ethnic and cultural identity of the national minorities, among which the Hungarian community plays an important part in the evolution of the Romanian society," reads the message.
Romania's European identity, the message says, is strengthened by ethnic harmony and solidarity that animate all this country's citizens.
The development of local communities all over Romania, seriousness and responsibility proved in the management of local development projects are the reflection of a European conduct that should animate the minority and the majority alike, Tariceanu says.
"Officials for the Hungarian community of Romania contributed and continue to make an important contribution to governance as well as to the promotion of Romania's interests in Europe and in the world.
The praiseworthy results of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania within the Government and Parliament, as well as in important Romanian and European organizations demonstrate that the Hungarians in Romania today have a respected voice and competent people that are an honour to Romania," says Tariceanu.
Tariceanu says March 15 is the National Day of Hungary, a country that is united to Romania by a common European vision as members of the same European and Euro-Atlantic family.
"Let us, Romanians and Hungarians, voice together our wish to consolidate the open spirit and common wish for building our European future in harmony, as we do each year on March 15," Tariceanu concludes.
