National Commission on Prognosis estimates 6.5 percent economic growth in 2008

The National Commission on Prognosis (CNP) estimates the economic growth at 6.5 percent in 2008, with the gross domestic product to reach 470 billion lei, up from 404.7 billion lei in 2007, shows the short-term spring prognosis made public on the institution’s Web site.
The industry output will climb to 5.2 percent, while the construction works will expand at 22 percent.
Last year’s economic growth was 6 percent, with the industry output having increased 5.4 percent and the construction works having grown 33.6 percent.
According to the predictions, the Romanian commercial deficit (FOB/CIF) will account for 18.4 percent of GDP this year, i.e. at a level similar to 2007. In terms of value, the commercial deficit is put this year at 24.3 billion euros; this compares to 21.502 billion euros last year.
The CNP anticipates the FOB exports will rise at 17.4 percent, up from 13.7 percent last year, to 34.5 billion euros.
The CIF imports are estimated to slow down their growth pace to 15.6 percent this year, down from 24.9 percent in 2007; the CNP predicts they will amount to 58.8 billion euros.
According to the CNP prognosis, the single currency is anticipated to trade at an average 3.55 lei this year, compared to 3.3373 lei in 2007.
The CNP anticipates the inflation rate this year at 5.4 percent and an annual average inflation rate at 7 percent. The Commission’s previous forecast said the December-on-December inflation rate will be 4.5 percent and the annual average inflation rate will stand at 5.7 percent.
The target set by the National Bank of Romania this year is 3.8 percent plus or minus one percentage point.
The CNP forecasts that the Romanians’ net average salary earnings in 2008 will go up to 1,181 lei, on the rise by 13.23 percent on 2007, when they amounted to 1,043 lei.
The Romanians’ gross average salary earnings are put at 1,580 lei, up from 1,410 lei last year.
The net average salary earnings will attain 1,355 lei at end-December 2008, while the gross average salary earnings will amount to 1,822 lei.
The number of the employees is estimated to go up 2 percent this year, to 4.865 million persons; this compares to 4.77 million employed Romanians in 2007, the CNP said.
The Commission also anticipates that the unemployment rate will keep steady at last year’s level of 4.1 percent. There will be 360,000 registered jobless people, while there will be an average 8.335 million employed persons, the CNP said.
