Reactors 3 and 4, “business of the century” in energy

19 martie 2008

Information in English

The project worth over 2.3 billion euros addressing reactors 3 and 4 of Cernavoda Nuclear Plant (southeastern Romania) has gained the attention of the important giants in energy, with the option to buy energy at a very competitive price having brought six companies: CEZ (Czech Republic), Enel (Italy), RWE (Germany), Electrabel (Belgium) and Arcelor Mittal (Romania).

Each company can access the production of the two reactors proportionally to its input. The sale price established in the latest documents made public was 32.5 euros per MWh, almost half the cost of one MWh produced by one energy plant. Thus, the business with energy that the two reactors will develop amount to at least 340.5 million euos annually, and this multiplies by 40 years – the lifetime of a reactor. The outcome is energy worth 13.6 billion euros for seven companies.

According to analysts from Wood & Co., the largest investment bank in the Czech Republic, state-run company Nuclearelectrica will decide on the consortium to build the two new units in Cernavoda. Thus, CEZ, Electrabel, Enel and RWE will have 15 percent each, Iberdrola and Mittal Steel, 10 percent each, and the state, through Nuclearelectrica, will control 20 percent.

Teodor Chirica, General Manager of the company, said a final structure is expected at the end of March. "Theoretically, we may go with all six ahead, practically, some may renounce on the way," Chirica said.
