19 martie 2008

Information in English

Over 70 percent of the Romanian small- and medium-sized firms (SMEs) are currently facing a labour shortage.

The staff shortage in such companies stands at 17 persons at present and it might double next year, show figures supplied by the National Council for the SMEs.

There are some 400,000 SMEs that lack the employees they need, with the shortage being twice the 2007 level.

The most sought-for jobs by the SMEs are auto painters and mechanics, drivers, security guards; also in demand are the sales agents, chemical operators and designers as well as highereducation graduates like specialists in electronics and steel industry.

The National Council representatives call on the Government to curb labour taxation and to give tax breaks to the companies that hold training and re-training courses from their own funds, in a move to improve the situation in the job market.

The sectors most affected by the labour shortage are construction, light industry, farming and shipbuilding.

The employers’ associations in the construction sector put the labour shortage at some 300,000 workers. Unofficial figures show more than two million Romanians are working in Western Europe.
