Loading ...American company Colgate-Palmolive, the world’s biggest toothpaste maker will shut down by the end of the year the production of toothpaste of the plant in Brasov (centre Romania).
The Romanian plant will be relocated to Poland, following a reorganization programme which encompasses the operations of three plants in Europe – Anzio (Italy), Gebze (Turkey) and Salford (UK). As many as 45 employees will be laid off from the Romania-based plant, 400 people in UK and about 200 in Italy and Turkey.
Colgate-Palmolive is the leader on the Romanian market of oral hygiene with a turnover of some 59 million euros in 2006 and a profit of 10.8 million euros.
In 2005, Colgate-Palmolive announced it allowed for the shutdown of the Brasov-based plant.
Colgate-Palmolive entered the Romanian market in 1992, when it set up the joint company Colgate-Palmolive Romania, alongside Norvea with production facilities in Brasov and in Bucharest (Romania’s capital). In 2006, the company purchased the 24-percebnt stake held by Norvea Brasov in exchange for 25 million euros, subsequently increasing the stake to 100 percent in the branch from Romania.
The Colgate-Palmolive branch is among the first companies on the market of toothpaste, whose value is appraised at some 50 million euros. The market’s annual growth is of some 10 percent.
The main competitors on the Romanian market of Colgate-Palmolive are Procter&Gamble and GlaxoSmithKline.
