Romanian President Traian Basescu took the invitation extended by the National Union of the Lawyers' Associations in Romania to attend the Congress of the Lawyers in Romania, which is held on Saturday at Costinesti (south-eastern Romania, on the Black Sea coast), as he was 'aware of the importance and part played by lawyers in society, of their capability to spot what works and what does not work in justice and society.'
Traian Basescu thinks that, at present, the profession of a lawyer faces the perception that the professional morality and the native sense of defence are not longer important and that everything comes down to the money interest.
'Some people's perception is that fees are disproportionate to the activity carried out and that only people having more financial resources are better defended,' said the President, who, on the other hand, voiced conviction that 'this perception is quite wrong as, in the Romanian legal tradition, lawyers were some of the most brilliant minds. There were lawyers and at the same time professors, cultural personalities but also great statesmen'.
The Head of State mentioned the clearer differentiation of the part played by business lawyers lately. Big companies prefer having a lawyer inside the company itself, thus offering the lawyer the possibility to specialize in a certain field.
'I hope I shall be able to count on your support in this process of institutional modernization of the Romanian State, of building a stable legislation based on the respect for the citizen,' the Head of State told the lawyers attending the congress.
The Head of State said that it was 'only the cooperation between the profession of a lawyer and the other legal professions that ensures the good functioning of the legal system and this can only be achieved by observing the guarantees of the lawyers' independence in exerting their profession, without unjustified restrictions or pressures.'
President Basescu also remarked the fact that the mission carried out by a lawyer was primordial, the exercise of the right to defence being an essential condition both of the law-based state and of a democratic civil society.
'Lawyers are not only free lancers, they are also partners of justice, a fact that makes the position you hold be one implying much responsibility,' Traian Basescu told the lawyers that were present at the congress.
The Head of State opines that the profession of a lawyer means knowledge, convincing power, a continuous improvement of one's training, rhetoric and much diplomacy.
Traian Basescu realized that lawyers were among the citizens every day, protecting them from the abuses they were subject to.
'I too, as President, am at the disposal of the citizens. I should say that this is something uniting me and you,' said the Head of State, who made it clear that he attended such an event for the first time.
