Wizz Air low cost airline reported a tripling of passenger in the first four months of 2008, to 225,000 passengers, according to Natasa Kazmer, Corporate Communications & Public Affairs Manager, quoted by Business Standard on Friday.
Of total turnover, some 30 percent is made up of tickets sold to business people. The company posted €30 million turnover last year in Romania. 'Most popular destinations are Rome, London, and Barcelona. Flights launched this year, to Brussels and Valencia from Bucharest, and Dortmund, Valencia and Milan from Cluj-Napoca are also very popular,' added Kazmer.
Wizz Air plans to surpass Blue Air, low cost market leader in Romania. 'It is just a matter of time until we become market leader in Romania, as is the case in Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria. We have an elaborate strategy for Romania, which includes an increase in flight capacities, the launching of new routes, and opening new operational bases,' said Kazmer. She added that Wizz Air is market leader in all Central and Eastern European countries in terms of passengers. Wizz Air transported 400,000 passengers to and from Romania last year, while Blue Air transported 820,000.
The Romanian low cost market increased fourfold in the past few years, to some €140 mln last year. Market players estimate a 40 percent rise in 2008.
