Loading ...'The Middle East is among Romania's priorities, we should return the soonest to the strong links we had in the region; one way for Romania to get involved in the region is now through the EU and the European Strategy for the Middle East, ' Romanian ForMin Lazar Comanescu told a conference in Berlin on the consolidation of the Palestinian structures related to the state of law and civil security.
Comanescu told the press about Romania's stance regarding the agenda of the meeting on June 24, a press release said on Tuesday, June 24.
'The state of law and civil security are key elements for the building of a viable Palestinian state, and that is important for all those who, like Romania, believe in the view of two states, an Israeli one and a Palestinian one, living close to each other in peace and security, ' Comanescu said.
He announced the meeting about Romanian financial support worth 100,000 for the Palestinian Territories, from the budget for official assistance for development. The sum goes in support of concrete projects for the improvement of public order, more efficient road police, better criminology.
Comanescu said that Romania is examining a possible contribution to the EU police mission in the Palestinian Territories (EUPOL COPPS).
Romania intends to continue, in 2009 and 2010, its support for the Palestinian Territories, by offering technical assistance in fields such as the management of crises, public order, criminology, IT, a.s.o.
By the approval by presidential decree of the setting up of the Representation Office of Romania in Ramallah – Palestine, the Romanian Foreign Ministry initiates measures for the organization and opening of the office, possibly by the end of 2008.
The Office will contribute, among others, to facilitating the granting of assistance for the National Palestinian Authority.
The main purpose of the conference in Berlin has been the concentration and boosting of the international efforts in support of the Palestinian Authority as regards the state of law and civil security, a field considered to be a key one for the construction of a viable Palestinian state.
