Austrian company Wienstrom has bought over the 17 hydropower sub-stations put on sale by Hidroelectrica June 9-13, for RON 103.9 million (some 28 million euros), 2.3 times the starting price, Hidroelectrica reports.
Wienstrom had bought five more hydropower sub-stations located in the Ilfov River basin at an auction held by Hidroelectrica, the main waterpower generator in Romania.
The next batch of sub-stations will be put up for sale most likely this September, and the sale procedures will be soon started, so that the 69 such facilities still in the hands of the Romanian Government may be sold out by early 2009.
Although Hidroelectrica announced early this March that the next batch of hydropower substations will be made up of 31 such facilities, the remaining ones may not be put up for sale yet because of some problems with the land where they are located.
"We have put up for sale only 17 of the 31 hydropower sub-stations initially announced for this year. The remaining ones will be sold as soon as the land problems are solved," Hidroelectrica officials told Rompres.
Under its EU accession negotiations, Romania pledged to turn private all its 150 state-owned hydropower sub-stations. Hidroelectrica sold 48 of them in 2006.
Late this February, 16 sub-stations were sold for 11 million euros, which was double the starting price. The 16 sub-stations, with a total installed power of 5.036 MW were bought by Wienstrom of Austria, Romenergo of Romania and the H&M Company Negresti Oas – Lescaci Negresti Oas consortium.
