President Basescu: 2009 NATO Summit to strengthen transatlantic relations

President of Romania Traian Basescu told a conference hosted on Monday, June 30, by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Brussels, that the NATO Summit scheduled for spring 2009 in France and Germany will highlight the vocation of the North-Atlantic Alliance as a unifier of Europe.
'In our vision, the future Summit to be held in France and Germany will illustrate – by the symbolism of the location as well – NATO's vocation as a re-unifier of Europe and the fact that the French-German tandem can act not only as the engine of European integration, but also a catalyst for transatlantic cooperation inside the Alliance. We hope that the 60th anniversary of the Alliance coincides with the restoration of NATO's military family, marked by the comeback of France into the military structures thereof,' said President Basescu.
The Romanian head of state mentioned that NATO will further contribute to intensifying relations between the US and the European Union.
'Starting tomorrow, July 1, France takes over the EU presidency. In the coming months we will definitely witness significant developments as regards the harmonization of security approaches. The Declaration which marked the end of the recent US-EU Summit already provides a common platform of goals the accomplishment of which requires NATO's direct contribution,' said Traian Basescu.
The Romanian President also underscored that NATO and EU defence policies must incorporate the approaches of the two organizations on the common goal of strengthening Euro-Atlantic and international peace and security.
The next NATO Summit will take place in 2009 in Kehl and Strasbourg, on the French-German border.
At the end of the high level meeting of the North-Atlantic Alliance held in early April in Bucharest, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that the organization of the NATO Anniversary Summit in Strasbourg and Kehl is proof of 'France and Germany's joining forces inside NATO.'
