APIA: Direct payments of 456 million euros for farmers

Almost 996,000 farmers received subsidies per area due to 2007 totaling almost 456 million euros by June 24, according to figures supplied to Rompres by the Payments and Intervention Agency for Agriculture (APIA).
 
The APIA management estimates that by the end of June all the payments will be finalized for the 1.24 million farmers, from the European funds allotted from the national budget for 2007.
 
The financial package for direct payments in 2007 was of over 440 million euros.
 
For 2008, over 1.130 million farmers requested direct payments for an area of 9.30 million ha, exceeding the reference area negotiated with the European Union of 8.7 million ha. The budget allotted from European funds amount to 527.9 million euros. The Romanian farmers will receive 60.6 euros/ha. To these sums will add the payments from the national budget (Direct Complementary National Payments) established for 2007 at 47 euros for staple crops and those for 2008 will be established by law.
 
The Community Direct Payments are granted for area, the Direct Complementary National Payments for crops. Benefiting from support are only those farmers who effectively exploit their land.
