Labour Minister: Romanian education system ill-tailored to labour market needs

14 iulie 2008

Information in English

The Romanian education system requires restructuring so as to meet the labour market’s needs, which increasingly focus on skilled blue-collar work, Labour Minister Paul Pacuraru said on July 8 on the occasion of the launch of the strategic projects under the Sectoral Operational Program "Human Resources Development 2007 – 2013."

"The current formula of education choices needs to be reconsidered so as to meet the needs of the labour market. For instance, skilled workers are highly needed in Romania, but the education system is headed in a different direction," said Pacuraru.

According to the Minister, as much as possible of the 18 financing lines for the disbursement of European funding launched on July 8 should be spent for setting the foundation for a relevant decision by the responsible authorities.

"I have no doubt that human resource training is Romania’s major problem. Investments in human capital are the most important Romania can currently make, overshadowing even investments in technology," said Paul Pacuraru.

The Labour Minister participated on July 8 in the launch of calls for strategic projects under the Sectoral Operational Program (POS) "Human Resources Development 2007 – 2013" worth a combined 471.9 million euro.
