Better-than-expected sales of laptops

15 iulie 2008

Information in English

In Romania, the computer sales grow year on year, and 2008 is no exception in this sense. The sales of laptops rise over 100%, and the sales of desktops also rise, but at a slower pace.
Thus, the number of laptops sold rose 127.6%, while the sales of desktops rose below 10%.

Moreover, 42,5% of the PCs sold were laptops versus only 33% last year and the ratio will favor the laptops by the end of the year.

In 2008, the local hardware market will cross the mark of 1 million units sold, up 25% versus the 2007 sales, which stood at 944,000 units. "As compared with 2006, which was a poor year for the PC market, the sales rose significantly last year," said Valentin Negoita, president of the Association of IT Equipment Producers and Distributors (APDETIC).

He added in 2007 the sales of laptops rose almost 100%, and this trend will maintain also in 2007. On the other hand, the APDETIC president estimated the 25% leap in the sales of hardware equipment would lead to a 15% increase in the market’s value. Thus, in 2008, the market will reach 537 million euro, added Negoita.

According to him, in addition to the natural growth of the IT&C market, the sales will be boosted in 2008 also by the access to European structural funds and the resumption of computerization projects in the public administration.

IDC estimated the local IT market would reach this year 1.37bn euro, up 11% versus 2007, when its growth pace stood at 16.7%.
