The assets managed by the private banking department of the Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR), the biggest bank in Romania, have grown by 60% in the last 12 months and topped one billion euros, said manager of the BCR department mentioned above, Alex Titus Dumitrescu.

The estimations of the total volume of the market of private banking services in Romania say it will grow up to three billion euros. Other important players are ING Bank, the pioneer of these services in Romania, the Romanian Development Bank (BRD) SocGen, UniCredit Tiriac Bank and Raiffeisen Bank Romania.

"The largest accounts of our clients exceed the equivalent of ten million euros," Dumitrescu told Business Standard daily. More than 4,000 businessmen use the services offered by the 30 private banking managers of BCR. The number of the clients of the BCR "personal bankers" has increased by almost 50% in the past year and their average portfolio is about 250,000 euros.

The average portfolio of the BRD private banking is worth about 700,000 euros, according to Dana Bajescu, manager of Grup BRD Dorobanti. "BRD has not planned to manage the patrimony of an impressive number of clients, but rather to have clients with a high potential in its portfolio," said Dana Bajescu.

UniCredit Tiriac Bank manages assets amounting to over 250 million euros in private banking, according to the data that were available on June 30. The average portfolio of an investor was 200,000 euros. Last year the value of the assets managed by UniCredit Tiriac Bank grew by 50%, up to 200 million euros, Monica Ionescu, who is in charge of the private banking operations here, told daily Business Standard.

A "realistic and relatively cautious" estimate made by the BRD official quoted above refers to a 30-40% average increase in the number of clients on this market.
