Loading ...MEP Adrian Severin, member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, in opposition) stated in an interview, given to Adevarul daily, that the only surviving chance for the European Union (EU) is its transformation into a federation of states, through the construction of an "European people", of a "cosmopolitan nation".
Worried about the risk of EU collapse which, in his opinion, is suffering due to the absence of an integration policy and of restraints applied to the freedom of movement, Adrian Severin sees the current ambiguity as noxious.
In his vision, the Union, a still fragile construction from the economic and political points of view, is affected by the appearance of some fractures. The Romanian politician provided an example of Germany, which "is building oil pipelines in direct relation with Russia, circumventing all the Union member states which, geographically, are placed between the Russian and German borders". In case, he continued, "Germany will supply oil or gas delivered by Russia on the basis of some bilateral agreements, again, and not based on an integrated European policy, we are going to face a collapsed Europe".
Adrian Severin said that the EU no longer meets the security requirements of the member states. In his view, the tax increases is the most delicate issue linked to the reform treaty debate and harmonization of fiscal policies is a must. He pronounced in favor of a controlled social and fiscal dumping, which should be accepted as an European policy, not as a competition between nations within the Union.
The Euro-parliamentarian does not think the states are ready to accept communitarization, federalization of the fiscal policies, despite being "increasingly clear that, unless we will have harmonized fiscal policies, we cannot further survive as an European Union".
