French EU chairmanship should pay special attention to agriculture in new EU countries

Romanian MEP Constantin Dumitriu (European People’s Party – European Democrats, Liberal Democratic Party – EPP-ED, PD-L) asked France’s Minister of Agriculture Michel Barnier, as the official of the French EU chairmanship, to pay more attention to the agriculture of the new EU countries, Romania’s in particular, news release says.

Dumitriu’s intervention happened during an opinion exchange with the French Agriculture Minister in the EP Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.

"For several of these states, but particularly for us Romania, agriculture is one of the most important economic sectors, which, at the same time, needs massive investments in order to meet the European standards. In Romania, for instance, almost 25% of the manpower works in agriculture, but the agriculture’s contribution to the GDP stays extremely low. The European regulations should take the situation into account and have always in view that the European farmers have many years and funds to get adjusted to certain rigors, so, one cannot believe that 5 or 6 years are enough for Romanian farmers, with direct payments to reach 100% after nine years, only," the PD-L MEP said.
