Imports of mobile phones grew 122% in the first four months of 2008, daily Romania libera reports on August 1.
Over January-April 2008, imports of mobile phones stood at 3.5 million, twice more on the same period one year ago, according to information provided by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
The boom in the imports of mobile phones prompted also a rise in the number of subscribers and pre-paid users for operators in the field. On June 30, 2008, Orange Romania had 10 million customers, up 18% as against the first half of last year, Vodafone Romania – 9.2 million customers, adequate to a rise of 12.8% and Cosmote reported 4.2 million users in H1 last year, up 128% on 2007.
The most preferred phones by Romanians were those from the economic class, however, the Romanian buyer has started to switch to the multimedia segment,’’ said Liviu Stoica, general manager of Fonica, one of the most important dealers of Vodafone. The luxury phone segment ranks the third place in Romanians’ preferences. Stoica also said this year brought his company a rise of 177% in the sales of phones, to about 60,000 units.
The main supplier of mobile phones in Romania is the People’s Republic of China with 1,733,969 mobile phones over January-April 2008. China is followed by Hungary (932,954 mobiles) and India (186,408). Although they did not enter the ranking of thee first three places, significant imports are coming from Germany (170,035), South Korea (152, 185) and Finland (61,577).
