Romania might resume intra-community trade with imported pork

Romania might resume intra-community trade with pork from forward-processing units, president of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Agency (ANSVSA) Radu Roatis on August 1 told.
“We asked the European Commission to send in August a team of experts to assess eight meat processing units from six counties that work with imported raw material. If they get the EC nod, they will be allowed to export Romania-specific pork products – such as Sibiu salami – yet produced with raw material imported from the EU,” said Roatis.
The EC assessment mission will take place between August 18 – 29, 2008 and the final report will be released after 20 days.
Romania applied with the EC as early as May for the resumption of intra-community trade with pork products in forward processing units, but the decision is to be reached following the findings of the EC assessment and monitoring mission this month.
The EC accepted in spring Romania’s request to stop swine fever vaccination in swine farms, due to the low efficiency of marker vaccines used so far and community funds earmarked for vaccination will be spent to strengthen farm bio-security.
According to ANSVSA, there are some 70 units approved in Romania for exporting meat to the EU.
According to European norms, if no disease outbreak is registered within six months since the halt of swine fever vaccinations, Romania might be declared a country free of swine fever and might resume pork and pork product exports to the EU. Swine fever vaccinations will continue only this year and only in individual households and on wild boar.
In 2008, Romania had no swine fever outbreak although there were three of them in 2007, all in Timis County, and all with farms owned by US Smithfield Foods, where more than 50,000 hogs were slaughtered. A new outbreak was confirmed in early October 2007 in the Small Island of Braila, but with a wild boar.
Some 5.1 million pigs are raised in Romania in farms and individual households, of which almost 1.4 million in professional farms and 3.8 million in the population’s households.
Annual consumption in Romania stands around 11 million pigs. Before 1989, Romania’s swine stock was about 15 million.
