6 august 2008

Information in English

The local market of vegetables and fruit is estimated this year at approximately 1bn euro, out of which some 400m euro represents local production, in a context in which Romanians’ annual consumptions of vegetables and fruit reached 1m tonnes, out of which some 60% is imported, Ziarul financiar daily writes on July 31.

The data with the Ministry of Agriculture show Romania produces annually some 4.9m tonnes of vegetables and fruit, out of which vegetables – 45%, table grapes – 15%, and fruit – 40%. The value of the local production of fruit and vegetables represented 3.09% of GDP in 2006, namely 2.9bn euro (1.96% for vegetables and 1.13% for fruit).
The biggest quantity of vegetables and fruit, some 60%, sells in farmers’ markets, with the rest being sold in hypermarkets, supermarkets and near-home shops.

“The best-selling products are bananas, oranges, tomatoes, apples, potatoes and lettuce. In this field, most products have a seasonal sale, with the peak sales being recorded always before holidays”, says Eugen Stirbu, manager within Real  Hipermarket Romania.
In hypermarkets, the local products represent some 30%, and the retailers say they resort to imports because they do not find in Romania farmers to produce in the quantities demanded by consumers and also because the Romanian fruit and vegetables have a poorer quality.Remarking the shortage of local products, the investors focused last year on the orchards with apple, pear and prune trees with high density per hectare, as in the western countries, the quoted daily writes.
