Romania is a firm supporter of the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, underscored the Chamber of Deputies’ speaker Bogdan Olteanu at the Summit of the speakers of parliaments in Central Europe, which took place in Prague, 26-27 September.
“This Treaty is not just a mere document, a text on a sheet of paper, but a package of reforms that will lead to the strengthening of the institutional role, removing the democracy deficiencies, by coming closer to the people, and the concrete application of the EU values in all the aspects of the
people’s life”, Olteanu said.
Bogdan Olteanu participated, on this occasion, also in the debates on “New forms of cooperation between national parliaments in the EU”.
According to Olteanu, the leaders in the EU must assume a leading role in the future European construction and explain the citizens of their states the need for applying the European projects.
“The citizens’ opinion must be respected because democracy is the basic foundation of the European philosophy, and the government must back their position within these debates,” said Olteanu in reference to the situations when the Lisbon treat was rejected.
In the wake of Olteanu’s address, three points out of those proposed by him were included in the final declaration of the summit. These points refer to the acknowledgement of the progress recorded by Croatia in the negotiation process regarding the EU entry and the confidence it will be finalized in the shortest time possible.
Another point refers to the acknowledgment of the political and social reforms made by Turkey and its rapid coming closer to the EU values. The other point refers to the continuation of the support of the inter-parliamentary cooperation with the neighbor states Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia.
