President Traian Basescu does not believe Romania will no longer have a European commissioner, if the Treaty of Lisbon does not come into force on January 1, 2009.
Asked what he believes about that, President Basescu said, on September 23, at Cotroceni presidential Palace, that Romania favors the idea that a solution be adopted, at the European Council, in December, at the latest, considered undebatable in the EU, before the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty.

“We are for the extension of the Treaty of Nice, in all its effects, including that saying that each country has a commissioner in the European Commission,” said Basescu, at the end of a meeting with Irish President Mary McAleese, currently on a visit to Romania.
With reference to the rejection of the Treaty of Lisbon, by referendum, in Ireland, Basescu underscored that Romania respects, “with no hesitation”, the decision of the Irish people.

“In no case does Romania see other solution than to wait for a new decision of the Irish people concerning the coming into force of the Treaty of Lisbon. We are rejecting any solution showing lack of solidarity of the 27, in the EU,” Basescu said.

Irish President Mary McAleese said that no answer is possible now concerning the solving of that matter.
“We cannot give an answer now, the Government is analyzing a solution together with the European partners. We have no answer, we are looking for one,” said McAleese.
If the Lisbon Treaty is abandoned, the new European Commission, to be formed in 2009, will have less than 27 commissioners, as stipulated in the Treaty of Nice, in force now.
