Asked what he believes about that, President Basescu said, on September 23, at Cotroceni presidential Palace, that Romania favors the idea that a solution be adopted, at the European Council, in December, at the latest, considered undebatable in the EU, before the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty.
With reference to the rejection of the Treaty of Lisbon, by referendum, in Ireland, Basescu underscored that Romania respects, “with no hesitation”, the decision of the Irish people.
“We cannot give an answer now, the Government is analyzing a solution together with the European partners. We have no answer, we are looking for one,” said McAleese.
If the Lisbon Treaty is abandoned, the new European Commission, to be formed in 2009, will have less than 27 commissioners, as stipulated in the Treaty of Nice, in force now.
