Romania’s exports to Italy grew 5.55% in the first 5 months of 2008, accounting for a share of 15.9% in the overall exports, the attaché for economic problems of the Romanian Consulate in Milan Adrian Georgescu told.
“Exports amounted at 2.18 billion euros and, after the first five months of the year, Italy ranks second in the total volume of Romania’s commercial exchanges, with a volume of 4.88 billion euros”, he said.
As regards Romania’s imports from Italy they stood at 2.70 billion euros, with a weight of 12% in the total imports on May 31, 2008. Compared to the same period of last year, imports grew by 1.95%.
“As such, the bilateral trade balance is negative, with a difference of 522.94 million euros”, mentioned Adrian Georgescu.
The highest weight in the total of Romania’s exports to Italy continues to be held by textile industry products, followed by machines and electrical equipment and devices. Exports weight of fabrics in the total exports to Italy accounted for 25.6% after the first five months of 2008.
Export of fabrics stood at that date at the value of 559.28 million euros.
Exports of machines, electrical equipment and devices accounted for 16.6% of the overall exports, exceeding 305 million euros. Exports of footwear, hats, umbrellas accounted for 15.8% in the overall exports, being in the value of 343.4 million euros.
“The most significant Romania’s imports to Italy were those of machines, electrical equipment and devices, on May 31, 2008. They accounted for 23.5% in the overall imports, attaining the value of 635.7 million euros”, pointed out the Attaché for economic problems of the Romanian Consulate in Milan.
The imports of machines and electrical equipment were followed by imports of fabrics and common metals, with an weight of 18.2% in the total of imports and, respectively, of 14.6%. “We plan to promote Romania in order to encourage Romania’s exports of value added products, not just raw materials”, stressed Adrian Georgescu.
At the end of 2007, Italy ranked second in the total volume of Romania’s commercial exchanges, with a volume of 11.49 billion euros. Exports exceeded five billion euros and imports stood at almost 6.5 billion euros, so that the commercial balance was on the negative, with 1.47 billion euros. Compared to 2006, exports rose by 8.11%, and imports by 14.18%, according to the quoted source.
At the end of May this year, a number of 25,854 Romanian-Italian joint companies were registered, with an invested capital of 862 million euros.
