The main issue approached during the meeting on October 2 between the Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso was that related to Romania’s law package on energy-clime, occasion on which the Romanian head of Executive reiterated Romania’s support to the EU objective to cut polluting emission by 20% by 2010, according to Tariceanu.

“Romania is quite interested in the issue, as it needs to continue with the accelerated development in the latest years, and also to maintain a solid industrial platform. And, as we all know it, industries pollute. Nevertheless, Romania will remain a supporter of the EU objective to cut such emissions polluting the atmosphere by 20% till 2010. EU needs to stay a leader in terms of measures taken to cut pollution and we want to support such efforts,” Tariceanu said.

He also explained that Romania has seen dramatic economic changes since 1990, when the communist regime collapsed, with the polluting emissions having dropped by 48% till 2005, in the contest the level of such emissions in European countries went upward.

“We have to deal with a supplementary effort to cut emissions, as compared with the European countries, that’s why I have to recognize we start building from almost nothing. It is my duty thus to ensure a perspective in which the economy to be able develop further too without constraints to put pressure on it and to make it lose in front of the competition, because of the supplementary costs generated by antipollution measures,” Tariceanu also said.

The Romanian PM explained that the European Commission is currently discussing on a new formula to compensate such countries “which might feel penalized.”
