The volume of the British investments in Romania realized over 1990-2007 exceeded 4 billion euros, with UK ranking thus 7th in terms of investments in Romania, according to data Romanian Embassy in London.
In Romania, there were registered 3,572 companies running on British capital late last year, with total injections reaching 6333.37 million euros and with a weight of 3.77% in the total direct foreign investment in Romania.
The most attractive field for such British investors in Romania stayed the petrochemical sector, the chemical, sector, the oil platforms exploitation, home appliances and electronics industry, aeronautics, telecommunications, textile and food industries.
According to data provided by the Romanian Embassy to London, the main British investors in Romania are LNM Holdings, which took over the metallurgical plant based in Galati (eastern Romania), SIDEX, Shell – trade with fuels, minerals and chemicals, Glaxosmithkline – production of drugs via the privatisation and development of Europharm Brasov, the Vodafone operator – mobile telephony, Brewery Holdings LTD – producing beer at Miercurea Ciuc (central) and Hunedoara (western).
Moreover, among the British investors in Romania is also Lucas Industries Plc., involved in the production of car cables in the Arad (western) development area, Network and Fertinvest holdings Ltd. operating also in the furniture industry, and Arif Al-Ali, operating in the non-alcoholic drinks sector.
There are also present on the Romanian market such companies like Purolite, International Ltd – making chemical products, Enterprise Oil – oil exploitation, especially in the wastes and energy management, and more important renewable energy. Moreover, there exists a special interest in the real estate sector, on the logistics component and commercial complexes.
The most recent British investments to Romania were realized by the Makita – hand tools, Kensington & Edinburgh estates – shopping centres, Regenersis – recycling of mobile telephony wastes and Wellstream Plc – oil and gas conducts, with a high coefficient in terms of environment protection.
Moreover, there will be developed the cooperation with specialized British companies on the local administration level, specialized in accessing European funds, which might contribute to the increase in the investment volume in Romania.
According to the representatives of the Romanian Embassy to London, the main advantages of Romania in attracting British investments are the geographical positioning, the relatively large internal market, the fact that is opened to such states former CIS members, it has modern and efficient communication systems, qualified labour force and still cheap in certain sector (information technology), similar culture with countries in the western continent.
