Automobile Dacia will produce this year as many as 290,000 cars at most compared to 350,000 estimated by the company’s management at the beginning of the year, the diminution of the production being prompted especially by the strike at the car plant in Pitesti (southern Romania) sources with the company told Business Standard.

At the beginning of the year, the company estimated a production of 320,000-350,000 units compared to 220,000 units manufactured last year. Starting next year, the car plant’s capacity will be extended to 400,000 units.

„This year 290,000 cars will be produced most likely and only in the most beautiful dreams we can think about the level of 300,000 units. Obviously, the main cause for the reduction of production was the strike of March, which could not be fully compensated through extended working time,” said the sources cited by the daily.

Contacted by the aforementioned daily, Dacia management did not comment the information.
On the other hand, president of the managing board of Automobile Dacia, Christian Esteve, quoted by AFP said in April this year that in 2008 as many as 320,000 cars will be assembled and that all the necessary measures will be taken for the observance of this commitment.

„The daily losses caused by the all-out strike at Dacia car plant in March amounted on average at some 8 million euros,” said the representative of the press office of Automobile Dacia, Silviu Sepciu.
„We did not make exact calculations, however, they should take into account the daily production of 1,300 cars (the price of a car ranges between 6,400 euros and approximately 13,000 euros), as well as the technological flows,” said Sepciu at the time.

President of the Dacia managing board Christian Esteve quoted by AFP said that a distinction should be made between the unaccomplished turnover and the effective losses, stressing that the losses reached 13 million euros during the strike.
The French carmaker Renault aims to invest 300 million euros in Dacia Pitesti until 2009.

Subsequently total investments might reach some 1.6 billion euros, for the increase of the annual production capacity to 400,000 units but also for the research-development activities of Logan model.
The share market of the main carmaker shrank on the Romanian market from 36.3% in 2006 to 28% in 2007. After the first eight months this year, the market share was of 27%.

Automobile Dacia traded last year in Romania as many as 102,062 cars Logan model, down 5.3% compared to 107,777 units one year ago.
Trade unionists with Automobile Dacia went on general strike on March 24, the end of the protest was conditioned by the acceptance by the French employer of the requests filed by employees, mainly a rise in salaries by 550 lei.

Strikers resumed work after three weeks on April 11, after having accepted a new offer of the plant’s administration, which stipulated a rise in wages of 300 lei starting January 1 and 60 lei as of September 1, plus the extension of a bonus for good results for 2007 worth on average 1,000 lei.
The average exchange rate of the single European currency, announced by the National Bank of Romania for March-April was of 3.6823 lei for one euro.

In Romania, the growth pace of the wages, made up of 2 digits, is considered by local employees associations and business people as a significant threat to the macroeconomic stability in the long run, considering the rise reported by consumption increased the foreign deficit, daily Ziarul Financiar reports.
„We are not so competitive as a few years ago and we’ll become less and less attractive if the spending for labour force will continue to increase significantly,” said the chief of the research department of Raiffeisen Bank Ionut Dumitru.
