European institutions have to approve an action plan for the protection of the citizens of the EU member countries, in the context of the international financial crisis, leader of the Social Democratic EMPs Adrian Severin said on Friday, at a press conference.

Such a plan, he added, should get materialized, first, by the guaranteeing by the European Commission, of banking funds, and, at the same time, it takes into account the fact that, in parallel with the financial crisis in the West, there is a political crisis in the East, related to conflicts in the proximity of Russia.

Severin said that the need to protect citizens against excessive economic risks has been, the past week, of concern for the EMPs, with talks in this respect having to continue in the period to come.
On this occasion, it has been noticed that “the European Union is too weak in point of institutions, “the coming into force of the reform Treaty is necessary, having among its objectives the protection of citizens against the risks of modern economy.

“We have required that a European mechanism and budget be urgently set in place, apt to allow the full guaranteeing of the savings of citizens in banks, for the international financial crisis not to affect the real economy. This agitation in the financial markets starts to affect a lot the shares of companies which are not banking ones, which have productive assets, it shakes their efficiency,” Severin said.

He voiced satisfaction about a decision regarding the adoption at the level of the European Parliament of the EU symbols, an element of the cohesion and unity of the EU member states.
According to the MEP of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the international financial crisis has political impact also, marking “the decline of the world neo-Liberal current.”

“The crisis in the financial market cannot pass unnoticed in Romania, as long as it questions an entire economic and social model, the neo-Liberal model, which dominated not only Romania, but also Europe and the entire world, and which placed emphasis on deregulation and the withdrawal of the state from the management of the economic and social fields. The system was “Let the state assume only marginal functions’ (…)

It is not the Social-Democratic capitalism that is at stake now, the neo-Liberal one is, which unleashed selfishness, irresponsibility, incompetence, the assuming of uncalculated risks and greed. Unfortunately, the idea that the market is able to resolve everything has led also to less strictness in the skill of people working in the banking field, in companies, in public institutions, “ said Severin.
