Premier Calin Popescu-Tariceanu stated on Thursday, at the end of the European Council, that the effects of the global financial crisis are starting to be felt in Romania, as well, a first consequence being the postponement for 2009 of the decision on Voestalpine investment in the steel industry field.

"You can verify this information with the Austrian press agency, which says that the decision on Voestalpine investment will be postponed for 2009. This is the first element likely to appear linked to a series of significant investment projects and that is why it is normal we must approach with all cautiousness all it means economic issues in our country", said Tariceanu.

He added that, currently, this is not a simple financial crisis because increasingly it translates into elements signalling a world economic crisis which, in his opinion, will not affect just a number of state, but all the states on the globe.

"Measures are needed to tackle this situation. The USA already announced an aid package for the auto industry in the amount of 25 billion dollars. In the context, people argue in Europe in favor of keeping on the free competition and market economy regulations without state interventions which would lead to distortions on the market", underlined the Premier.

Tariceanu emphasized that at the European Council's level the decision was taken to grant 30 billion euros in order to come to the aid of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) sector. At the moment when the banking system ceases to function and these enterprises have no possibility to finance their operations, then "it is clear we are heading toward an economic collapse", he explained.
The Prime Minister said that the prospects of an economic crisis are very serious and the stock exchanges do nothing else but react to what is happening in the real economy.

According to the PM, the European Union reacted "fully aware and adequately" when confronted with the current big-dimension financial crisis, and reminded that the officials in Brussels took the decision to create a crisis management cell together with the need of a coordination between the central banks at European level.

"These elements will allow us to counter to a great extent a series of negative effects", stressed Tariceanu.
The following talks with the USA will be aimed at laying the basis of a new financial and monetary system, added the Premier. "From this point of view it is normal that the world system must be re-thought. The decision is to do that till the end of December", said Tariceanu.
