McDonald’s fast-food chain employed some 700 people in 2008 and plans to hire a further 25-300 by the end of the year, to cover operations in new restaurants in Bucharest and the eastern cities of Iasi and Suceava.
In 2009, the company targets a total 5,500 employees, 1,000 more than at present.
Virtually all vacancies in McDonald’s restaurants are filled through internal promotions, as the company only employs entry-level commercial workers and management trainees. All employees working at the company’s headquarters and in its support departments previously worked in McDonald’s restaurants.
“Commercial workers need two to four months before they are promoted to a higher position, where they spend some six months. With each promotion, the salary increase is some 20%,” McDonald’s Romania HR Manager, Irina Panaite, told Business Standard.
Most management trainees are university graduates. This is the path to the restaurants’ management structure or to a position at the company’s headquarters.
Panaite indicated that salaries in the company are above the market average and are set to increase 20% in 2009.
