Romania’s agriculture is insured over four times less compared to the average from EU member countries, as steps are necessary with a view to turning the insurance of crops against calamities more efficient, said on October 14, State Secretary with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) Gheorghe Albu on the occasion of the International Catastrophic Risks Forum (ICAR).
“In order to help the Romanian agriculture to reach its real potential, a tighter collaboration between the private environment and authorities is needed, but also the establishment of concrete projects for insuring cultures and agricultural machines against calamities, as well as the establishment of insurance premiums depending on each separate culture” said Albu.
On the occasion of the International Catastrophic Risks Forum, members of the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, of insurance companies and relevant associations tackled the completion of Law no 381/2002 on the extension of compensation damages in case of natural calamities in agriculture.
Romania is at present on the sixth place in Europe in terms of arable land and production, and it holds the eighth place in the world according to the arable land, with 40% arable land out of its entire surface, however, the production of cereals per hectare is of 3.5 tonnes, compared to 8 tonnes a hectare in the EU.
