Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu participated on October 13, in a meeting of the General Affairs and External Relations Council, in Luxembourg, the main topic debated was the preparation of the European Council of Oct 15-16, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
The talks of the European ministers were focused on the economic and financial crisis, the energy-climate changes and energy security packages, a stage evaluation of the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon, the endorsement of a package on immigration and asylum seeking.
During the meeting, adopted were, without debate, the conclusions about the Republic of Moldova, due to be endorsed by the European Council.
“The substantial conclusions adopted by GAERC convey a strong message, in the sense that the European Union is ready to pass to a new, substantial agreement, apt to bring the Republic of Moldova close to the EU, and to get involved more in solving the Transdniester conflict,” said Lazar Comanescu at the end of the meeting.
The Romanian minister also voiced hope that the negotiation mandate of the new agreement between the EU and the Republic of Moldova will be finalized by the end of the current year.
The debates in the foreign relations sessions were focused on the situation in Georgia. Examined was the enforcement of the agreements of Aug 12 and Sept 8, an evaluation of the relations between the EU and the Russian Federation was made, discussed was the preparation of the Conference in Geneva and of the Conference of the Donors regarding Georgia. Romania, like the other member states, analyzes concrete ways of participation in the efforts of reconstruction of Georgia, the release also said.
The Romanian minister reiterated, at GAERC, support for the observance of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Georgia, for the consolidation of the relations between the EU and Georgia.
According to the press release, other topics on the agenda of talks were the relations with Belarus and Uzbekistan and the situation in Zimbabwe.
