The governments of the EU states must not lose sight of backing the SME sector in their efforts to stabilize the banking system in full global financial crisis, said MEP Iuliu Winkler (UDMR, PPE-DE) at the meeting of the Political Bureau of SME Union, on 13 October in Brussels.

“Ensuring the stability of the European banking system represents the priority of the governments of the EU states in the attempt to cope with the challenges generated by the global financial crisis. At the same time, the government must make sure that 23 million European SMEs can keep their competitiveness and can cope with the economic uncertainties. The SMEs are the spinal cord of the European economy and that is why the measures against the global financial crisis must consider also the SME sector,” said Iuliu Winkler.

The meeting of the Political Bureau of SME Union adopted a resolution addressed to the European Council, which will convene in Brussels 15-16 October, requesting that the heads of states and governments, and also the French Presidency of the EU, take concrete measures for ensuring the SME access to financing, thus maintaining the competitiveness of the SME sector in the context of the global financial crisis.

SME Union proposes that the European Investment Bank should set up a guarantee fund form SMEs with an annual budget of at least 500 million euro, complementary to the national and regional guarantee institutions.
SME Union is an organization set up in 1996, whose main aim is establishing a framework of European rules favouring the SMEs, starting from the idea these play a very important role in the sustainable development of the economy, creation of jobs and producing welfare.
