Price of imported natural gas to go up to $550/1,000 cubic metres by year-end

29 octombrie 2008

Information in English

The price of imported natural gas will go up to $540-550 per 1,000 cubic metres by the end of this year, compared to the current acquisition price of $510 –520 per 1,000 cubic metres, which will deepen the losses already reported this summer at the acquisition of imported natural gas, general manager of Distrigaz Sud, Bernad Arnaud, told a news conference on October 23.

“By not recognizing the acquisition prices of the natural gas on October 1, 2008 the losses of Distrigaz Sud will increase, and this is prompted mainly by the lack of balance between the acquisition price of the resource and the selling price. According to the tariff methodology in Romania, the losses will have to be recognised in the next prices,” said the company’s generals manager.

Arnaud said, however, that although the price of oil barrel has dropped lately and the market of natural gas is based on the price of oil, the effects would mirror later in the contracts on the natural gas acquisition.
“A cut for consumers in the price of natural gas promoted by the reduction of the oil price might be seen only in Q1 next year, but if we request starting January 1, next year a recognition of the acquisition process of imported natural gas we’ll also request the recognition of previous losses and their bringing up-to-date,” said Arnaud.

Distrigaz Sud sells over the first 3 months about 40% of the amount of natural gas and 30% over the last quarter of the year, the remainder being sold in the remainder of 6 months.

The company has recently requested the rise in the selling price of the natural gas by 12%, as of October 1, allowing for the rise in the acquisition price of imported natural gas, considering it represents on average a third of the total consumption. The Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) decided, however, not to increase the price of natural gas starting October 1, 2008, therefore it generated losses to Distrigaz Sud.

Distrigaz Sud called on the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority to implement the price methodology that stipulates the recognition of the acquisition prices in the price to the final consumer.
