Loading ...Minister of Justice Catalin Predoiu stated on Wednesday (Oct 29) evening, in the opening of the 52nd edition of the International Association of Lawyers (UIA) Congress, that its organization in Bucharest represents a proof and is the result of the reputation enjoyed at present by this legal profession worldwide."
This reputation is built on the extraordinary results achieved by the lawyer profession in the past 18 years, since when it was extracted from the state's tutelage and took its fate in own hands. This is a moment of success, of triumph which must be marked as such", said Predoiu.
The Minister also said that this Congress demonstrates the UIA policy of opening, without reservations, toward the dynamic professions in Eastern Europe, namely the new Europe. Predoiu said the the fundamental mission of the lawyer is to defend the legitimate interests of the people by the application of the rule of law, the lawyers being among the most skillful law practitioners, in permanent contact with those who are subjects of the rule of law.
"Because I referred to the rule of law we cannot but remark the fact that this concept and reality are hard-tried all over the world. The looming crisis will also mean, among others, the need to boost the state's role in the solving of problems society is confronted with", said Predoiu.
The Minister said that the Romanian society is confronted for some time already with two different visions on the state's Constitution. "The Romanian economic dynamic and policy in the past years had the result that the Constitutional structure conceived in line with the reality at the beginning of the '90s is hardly tried.
These natural tensions created by the country's evolution were amplified by the strong collision between various political programs and by some strong political characters which, for the time being, fail to reach harmony at the state's helm", sustained the Minister.
Predoiu said that the years to come will bring important changes in Romania from political and Constitutional standpoints. He emphasized that the lawyers should take a more significant approach in this context, by a more pronounced "presence in the public space, by assuming the public agenda and getting involved into the political process of decision taking in the fortress".
Attending the UIA Congress there are Vice-president of the European Commission and Commissioner for Justice Jaques Barrot, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Bogdan Olteanu, Romanian Bar Association Chairman Gheorghe Florea. A thousand of guests from 70 countries take part in this event.
