Romanian MEP Gabriela Cretu (The Social Democratic Party, PSD, in Opposition) on October 22 called on the European Commission to have in view the use of some amounts, already approved, for financial education programs, the lack of information being a condition for the functioning of a speculative market and one of the favouring factors of the current world financial crisis.
Cretu’s request was made during a joint debate on the EU budget for 2009 in the European parliament’s joint sitting, reads a release of the Romanian delegation with the Socialist Group of the European Parliament.
Cretu is the author of the opinion of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection as regards the file of the EU budget for 2009.
“The budget’s approval is not a technical matter, for experts, but a profound political problem.
The budget settles the means necessary for the fulfilling of goals and proves the honesty of our commitments. The budget stipulations referring to the domestic market, the consumer’s protection, the SOLVIT program and customs, seem enough,” Gabriela Cretu says.
In her opinion, “problems are not missing.” “The world economy is on the verge of crisis, the financial market reveals its functioning limits and we see the faults behind some rules that are hard to understand for the citizen. It is proved, once more, the fragility of the position of the one who resorts to financial services.
Under these circumstances, the right majority in the budget commission rejects the proposal for amendment requiring the allotting of funds for the financial education of consumers. Not to save money. An even bigger amount than the one required is approved for an unspecified objective related to the consumer’s protection.”
“I urge the commission to have in view the use of the approved amounts in the respective budget line for financial education programs. The lack of information of some is a condition for the functioning of speculative market and not for the enrichment of some. It is not the time to defend them. It is preferable that the educated citizen should know to avoid risks and protect himself,” Gabriela Cretu said.
