The value of the Spanish exports to Romania has doubled over the past four years, from 439 million euro to 883 million euro while imports from Romania exceeded 565 million euro in 2007, some 20% more than in 2004.
“In 2005 Spain was buying from Romania more than it was exporting, but in 2006 exports went up and, as of 2007, the trade balance started to favor Spain,” head of the Foreign Trade Department of Valencia, Vicente Martinez Riera told Business Standard daily.
According to data supplied by the Chamber of Commerce from Valencia, most of the products exported by the Spanish companies to Romania are ceramics, cars, fruits or furniture, while the imports include forged iron, cars, electric tools, footwear and chemical fertilizers for agriculture.
Exports went up 30% in 2005 against 2004 and, by half-2008, exports were 40% bigger than throughout 2007.
Imports in 2005 went up 32% against 2004 while in Q1 of 2008 they went up 33% against 2007. Vicente Martinez Riera explained that Romania is an important display market for Spain, as the neighboring countries can also be approached from here.
As regards the economic crisis, especially the decline in the real estate field, the Spanish authorities have said that the Romanians on the Spanish labor market are affected like all other employees in this country and that the government is looking for solutions for their professional conversion or for helping them open a business.
Vice mayor on social problems in Castellon, Carmen Amoros, explained that the Romanians who have so far went to Spain have integrated very well there.
There are officially 750,000 Romanians in Spain but their real number is estimated at over one million. As many as 150,000 Romanians are working in the field of constructions or services and the others in agriculture or as independent.
