Prime minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu has announced that talks on the basic principles for the pay of the public employees are completed and invites trade unions, employers' associations and political parties to sign an agreement on this issue.

"I have invited the officials of trade union confederations, employers' associations and political parties to sign together on Tuesday an agreement on these principles at the main offices of the Government. I am calling on the teachers' trade unions to join the dialogue between the unions and the Government and to not let the Left endanger the future of Romania for electoral reasons," Tariceanu said on Monday at the Victoria Government Palace.

Tariceanu mentioned that among the principles underpinning the pay to public employees agreed upon by the negotiating parties is establishing a ratio of the minimum and the maximum pay levels on a scale from 1 to 5, establishing a new base pay scale within the same business area and between activities within the same areas commensurate with the importance and complexity of the business conducted, implementing the new pay system through differentiated pay rises in 2009-2013, and approving the draft law on the pay within 6 months.

"Under this uniform pay law we will be granting responsible pay rises that will focus on the employees drawing small wages for a start. I know how hard it is to young public servants, doctors and teachers to make ends meets on small pay, and that is why they will be first on the list of pay rises," said Tariceanu.
He also warned that the Government will continue to act on pay rises, but in a responsibly manner and as long as the economy so permits. "We will rise wages in a responsible way and in time," said Tariceanu.
