Romania, highest retail growth rate in EU

Romania registered in September 2008 a 15% growth in terms of retail volume, compared to the similar period of last year, this being the highest growth rate among the 27 European Union member states, according to data presented November 5 by the European Statistics Office (Eurostat).
 
Romania is followed in order by Poland (up 7.1%) and Slovakia (4.5%). Among the 27 member states, retail volume advanced in nine member states and declined in ten. The largest drops were registered in Latvia (minus 13.4%), Estonia (minus 9.9%) and Spain (minus 7.1%). As for the annual pace, August 2008 compared to September 2007, retail volume declined by 1.6% in the Euro zone (EA 15) and 0.4% in EU 27.
 
In September 2008 compared to the previous month the retail volume advanced in nine member states, declined in another nine member states and remained unchanged in Denmark. The highest increases were recorded by Luxembourg (2.6%), Belgium (1.4%) and France (0.9 percent). Romania ranks fourth, with 0.8% growth.
 
Steepest declines were registered in Latvia (minus 4.1%), Estonia (minus 2.6%) and Germany (minus 2.3%). Retail volume showed a decline of 0.2% in the Euro zone (EA 15) and 0.1% less in EU 27, after in August 2008 retail volume advanced by 0.3% in the Euro zone (EA 15) and 0.4% in the European Union.
