For the Romanian banks, the small and medium sized companies (SMEs) are a true “El Dorado”, but the future belongs to loans for agriculture, head of the Romanian Banks’ Association (ARB), Gratian Ghetea said.

He explained that in the 90s all banks were interested in the big foreign corporations that invested in Romania, and the banks progressively started to orient themselves towards individuals, but this period has passed as well and now, companies, mainly SMEs, are the new “El Dorado”.

“The European funds had and still have a special role in increasing the banks’ appetite for the activity of this category (SMEs) and, in my opinion, we will witness, in the near future, a fight for winning the SMEs market,” the ARB president said in a speech delivered at the conference “Romania, two years of European activity report”, organized by CERISS Foundation.

In his opinion, the biggest potential for the Romanian credit market is the rural area, as a lot of things need to be done in this field, as regards investment, in order to create a level close to that of the other EU countries and the banks have an important role in that.
The conference was staged at the European Parliament, being occasioned by a two-day internship at the EP of the first graduates of Executive Master of Public Administration organized by the Romanian Banking Institute.
