PWC: Costs for wages weighing most in Romania

14 noiembrie 2008

Information in English

The costs for wages account for 17.4% in the overall spending of companies on the local market, situation which puts Rumania on the first place in the region of Central and Eastern Europe (ECE), according to a survey conducted by consulting and audit company PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Romania.

For the companies from Hungary, the wages of employees account for 12.5% of totals costs, in Poland – 11% and 11.7% in Bulgaria. Only the companies from the Czech Republic feel the same wage pressure as in Romania (17.2%), reads the survey called “European Capital Effectiveness Report,” conducted by Saratoga Institute of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

“In the context of the financial crisis, in which companies are more and more cautious with costs, we notice that companies are more burdened in Romania compared to other countries in the region from the viewpoint of the wages they pay to employees and due costs,” Ruxandra Stoian, manager with the Department of Consulting in Human Resources of PricewaterhouseCoopers Romania told daily Business Standard.

According to her, the significant wage rises over the past years promoted local companies to bear at present fix costs higher than in other countries of Eastern and Central Europe, therefore, they might put additional pressure in the context of the financial crisis.

“At the same time with the diminution of the economic growth, companies we’ll be compelled to maintain profit by cutting costs,” said Stoian.
The fields in which the share of wage costs is the highest in the total costs are banking services (50.5%), IT (45.9%) and insurance (39.9%).

In turn, in retail and in telecom, the costs for labour force account for 15%. “European Capital Effectiveness Report” presents a portfolio of people performance indicators across industry sectors and Europe, together with detailed guidance on the methodology and application of human measurement, reads the web page of Saratoga Institute.
