Romania supports setting of specific policy for small farms
14 noiembrie 2008
Romania will support the establishing of a specific policy for small farms, as part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), said, on November 7, minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Ciolos, at a seminar at Indagra Farm exhibition.
“CAP should get adapted to the new realities of the enlarged EU, by setting specific policies for small farms and by finding instruments of support, in order to be able to more actively participate in the supply of the market, against the background of the world growth in agricultural products,“ said Ciolos. He believes that the small farms in the EU, and here mentioned were not only those in Romania and Poland, but also those in Italy, Spain and Greece, could contribute to supply to the EU market with fresh and diverse products.
Currently, in the 27 states of the EU, around 75% of the farms hold up to five ha, 10% have an area between five and ten ha and only 10% stretch over 20 ha. According to the Agriculture minister, small farms have some advantages, their agriculture is extensive, although it is not very performing, it has not much impact or even good impact on the environment. Also, small farms use varieties with special specific values, contributing to maintaining the diversity and conservation of rare species and varieties.
“Agriculture at small scale has a big role in supply to local market, ensuring to a great extent the self-sufficiency of the communities in their area, which allows for professional trade and to for better concentration on supply of big cities as well as of international markets, “ Ciolos said.
Last but not least, mentioned was as a benefit of agriculture at small scale the offer of fresh, high-quality products made in small farms, often after traditional methods, diminishing to a minimum the necessities of preserves.
According to the Romanian minister of Agriculture, agriculture at a small scale has been neglected, systematically, in the past decades, with the agricultural polices focusing mainly on support of intensive agricultural production, which, although, it has an important role in supply to the market, it presents a series of disadvantages in comparison with the farming production at small scale, one of this disadvantages is the negative impact on the environment and the less lasting exploitation of resources.
In Romania, of the four million existing farms, only 30,000 are large ones.
