First 40-km-long Transylvania Highway segment to open to traffic at end-2009
19 noiembrie 2008
The first 40 km of the Transylvania Highway along the Campia Turzii – Gilau (Cluj County) route are supposed to open to traffic at the end of 2009, provided that the necessary resources for the contractor’s remuneration in 2009 are made available, Radu Gaspar, project manager with the Romanian National Roads and Highways Corporation (CNADNR) said on November 13.
“Provided that we can rely next year on a financing of 520 million euros for works on the Transylvania Highway, the first 40 km of the highway heading for Cluj City will be ready for commissioning. Contractor Bechtel will complete the 40 km, but for the stretch to be opened to traffic, two road junctions also need to be completed,” Gaspar told a conference on the development of infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe.
Gaspar said that Bechtel has poured the asphalt on a 10-km long segment and another 30 km have the load-carrying layer cast in place.
Although the two sections Bechtel is working on will be completely paved by 2009, the entire 116 km-long section will open to traffic only in 2010, according to the works schedule.

The cost of the highway, currently estimated at over four bln euros, might rise quite substantially, considering that Scetauroute, the Romanian state’s consultant, presented in early 2007 a report estimating that the costs for another two segments: Sighisoara – Targu Mures (56 km) and Targu Mures – Campia Turzii (36 km), might double.
Bechtel is currently working on two segments: Campia Turzii – Gilau (52 km) and Suplacu de Barcau – Bors (64 km). The amounts assigned this year by the Transportation Ministry for the Transylvania Highway are in excess of 500 million euros.
The contract requires these segments to be completed by 2009, next scheduled is the Cluj – Suplacu de Barcau stretch that is due for completion in 2010 and that is to connect with the Romanian-Hungarian border. The amounts assigned in 2008 shall also be used to kick-off works on another two stretches by the end of the year: Cluj – Mihailesti and Mihailesti – Suplacu de Barcau.
The 415 km long Transylvania Highway project is divided in eight segments and includes over 55 km of bridges and viaducts, 94 walkways, 58 cross-passages and 16 road junctions, all due for commissioning in 2013.
